Welcome to The Hiking Fool. This venture, like life, is a work in progress. My name is Shel. I am 48 years old. I have spent the greater part of the last twenty years in Dallas, TX, although I have lived and traveled all over the United States.
I discovered hiking, and in turn a passion for the outdoors late in life. My father, who was an avid hiker well into his sixties, passed away in early 2014. His final wish was for my sister and I to spread his ashes on Mount Humphreys in Northern Arizona. This was my first real hike as an adult, and it proved to be a moment of discovery and personal awakening that eventually led me to becoming The Hiking Fool.
In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service, I decided to head out on the open road and hike as many of the National Parks as I can. This adventure has quickly evolved into a journey of self-discovery, self-improvement and personal redemption.
